Chapter Thirteen

The supper table was filled with noisy laughter and conversation. Lizzie watched with pleasure the way the children interacted with their grandmother. They were clearly overjoyed to see her. Her daughter Anne grinned happily at Lizzie, obviously relieved and glad that her grossmama was so nice.

Zack sat at the other end of the table, teasing Matthew, who seemed to blossom under his uncle’s attention.

“Onkel Zack, it’s nearly harvest time, isn’t it?”

“Ja, Matt. It is.” Zack addressed her. “I spoke with Peter Zook. He is going to help bring in the harvest. Afterward, we’ll go to his place and do the same.”

Lizzie was pleased at the news. “Peter’s wife, Rachel, is my oldest and dearest friend,” she explained for Sarah’s benefit. “She will be coming, too?” she asked Zack.

“Ja. And why would she not? She offered to bring her specialty dish. She said you would know what that is.”

Lizzie laughed. “Ja. I know.”

Zack stared at her. “And you’ll not tell us?”

“Nay,” she said. “I’ll let it be her surprise.”

“Mam, may I help with the food?” Mary Ruth asked. Lizzie, stunned by her eldest daughter calling her Mam, realized that she was staring. She grinned. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“We can all help,” Esther said. “We can work together here—if that is all right, Lizzie.”

Lizzie inclined her head with a small smile curving her lips. “I’ll enjoy that.”

Suddenly, there was excitement among the Fisher females about what to cook and bake for the harvest meal and who would make which dish. The eagerness of her daughters to assist thrilled Lizzie as did Esther’s and Sarah’s delight in participating and being here, on the farm, for the event.

After the main meal, Zack came up to her with dishes in his hands and a soft smile on his attractive face. Lizzie looked at him in disbelief. “You’re helping in the kitchen?” she said. “That’s women’s work. My father and brothers would never— Zack, you don’t have to do that. With all the girls in this house, we have plenty of help.”

“I know it’s not usual for most men, but I honestly don’t mind. I did chores for my mudder while she was ill. I just got into the habit of helping, I guess.”

Lizzie took the plates from him and put them in the dishwater. “Well, it’s not necessary, though it is appreciated.” She picked up a bowl of mashed potatoes and tried to brush past him to get to the refrigerator to put them away. But Zack didn’t move to allow her to pass. In fact, he shifted to block her exit.

Overwhelmed by intense feelings for him, she experienced alarm. “Zack—”

He placed a hand on her arm. With the weather cooler, she had taken to wearing her long-sleeved green dress. Still, despite the cotton fabric between his fingers and her, she felt the warmth of his touch as if his hand had encircled her bare skin.

“Lizzie,” he asked softly, “are you happy here on the farm?”

She shot him a startled gaze.
